inverted_father_ambigram_tattooWork. We have to do it. We have to do it to provide for our families. We pack our lunches and head off for the day. We board a plane and are gone for days at a time. We leave behind our families and pray that God sees fit for us to return. The people we leave behind are more valuable than the cargo in our bags. They are more important than the briefs in our cases. We don’t always remember this. We are thinking only of the work that lies ahead of us.

Focus. We are so focused on what lies ahead that we don’t see what is left in the rear view mirror. We miss the longing of our sons who only want us to take a second to play with them if only for a second. We miss the look in our daughters’ eyes hoping to be reminded that they are relevant. That they are beautiful.

25 Things We Can Do To Become Better Citizens (and Parents, too)

Good Citizen HandbookI was having a conversation with a friend here at Dad-Blogs. We were discussing the negative tone in politics when he said (paraphrasing), “I just want what’s good for our country. I want to be able to HOPE again. I don’t care who the president is.” It made me think for a moment. We have lofty expectations for our leaders. It is easy for us to criticize from afar, but take no action on our own. It is simpler to live our lives in a vacuum rather than actually doing something. I am proposing that we indeed, do something to become better citizens (and better parents in the process). Here are a few of my thoughts:

The State of the Union Address: In His Words

State_of_the_UnionAs the President described the “mess” that he inherited from G.W. Bush when he “walked through the door”, the cameras panned to Senator John McCain, who, although you could not hear him, mouthed the words to another senator, “That’s a bunch of bull s***”.

John McCain just earned major cool points in Mr. Man’s book.

Here’s the deal. While the president is saying things that would lead us to believe that he plans to govern from a slightly left of center point of view instead of a totally left of center as he has, why should we believe him?

He hasn’t learned to listen to the American people despite the message sent from Massachusetts (and more to come in November). He thinks he is right and governs as such. Jesus operated the same way, but He is God, after all. Maybe someone needs to remind Obama that he isn’t.

The proof is in the pudding, baby. Your actions have spoken much louder than your words, Mr. President. You speak of a bipartisan environment, but your track record thus far does not reflect such. However, let’s take a look at your words tonight.

The Wizards in a home game against the Toronto...

There was a link on Twitter recently regarding a new minor league basketball team exclusively for white, American-born basketball players. The league plans to place the first team in Augusta. Georgia. Here are a few excerpts from the article:

“The All-American Basketball Alliance announced in a news release Sunday evening that it intends to start its inaugural season in June and hopes Augusta will be one of 12 cities with a team.

"Only players that are natural born United States citizens with both parents of Caucasian race are eligible to play in the league," the statement said.”

The mayor of Augusta says that he is in favor of attracting sports teams to the city, but he can’t support a franchise that is racially- exclusive.

"As a sports enthusiast, I have always supported bringing more sporting activities to Augusta," he said. "However, in this instance I could not support in good conscience bringing in a team that did not fit with the spirit of inclusiveness that I, along with many others, have worked so hard to foster in our city."

Don “Moose” Lewis, the commissioner of the ABAA, said this:

Is The Problem With Tiger or Is The Problem With Us?

Just when we thought that the Tiger Woods story played itself out, I heard another twist on the news this morning: Black women are mad at Tiger. However, their problem with him is not the alleged affairs. The ten (and counting) mistresses were the collctive fuse that set off the fireworks. The problem goes much deeper than what we are seeing and hearing in the news. The problem that black women have is that they believe that Tiger and other successful black men think their too good for them. Let's face it: Tiger prefers to be with white women. He is married to a former Swedish supermodel. Every one of the mistresses are also Caucasian. In my view, there is nothing wrong with this. This is simply his preference.

This should not be an issue in this “post-racial” society. It is none of our business whom Tiger Woods (or anyone else for that matter) chooses to be with. Yet, many black women are mad as hell. Tiger happens to be the focal point of their anger even though he has personally done nothing wrong to an entire race of females. Even Wilt Chamberlain’s reach wasn’t that wide. If Tiger is not the problem, then what is?
