Gentle Dad Blogs members, we are about to enter two seasons of unparalleled sporting drama: the NCAA Tournament and Fantasy Baseball. Now, as we all know, regular baseball is quite possibly becoming America's third favorite pass-time behind football and basketball, but what it lacks in pace and excitement it makes up for in raw stats. In other words, Fantasy baseball is the penultimate in the fantasy genre.

Like last year, Dad Blogs is sponsoring a Fantasy Baseball league. Last year's winner--The Z's Dad won a boss hoody that acts a reminder to his dominance in all things Fantasy Baseball related at Dad Blogs. Who will step up and take the hoody this year? Who will challenge The Z's Dad for superiority in this amazing online community of dads/moms and curious onlookers? Will it be a dad-to-be who hasn't had his time completely usurped by diapers, ointments and sleepless nights? Will it be a dad whose kids have moved on from Huggies and sippy cups to SATs and lectures? Will it be, god forbid, a mom? One can only hypothesize.

What is known is how to join the fray.

What's In A Number?

With the news that Lebron James has officially submitted his request to the NBA to change his number next season from 23 to 6, I got to thinking about numbers. Specifically those of our sports icons and heroes. When I say 99, there's no doubt whose number comes to mind (no, not Rick "Wild Thing Vaughn"). Thanks to the MLB retiring the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, that one is a no brainer as well. In Boston, there's the great "33" and in LA, "32" holds a pretty special place. As a Carolina fan, the numbers "50" and "23" hold great value in our home.

I'll reserve my thoughts on why Lebron would do this (*cough* money *cough*) and what I actually think about it (*cough* staying in Cleveland *cough*) because I am interested in a greater discussion. I think I'm accurate in saying that as kids, most of us chose a number that was "our number". I know I did and my son has been no different. My 9 year old has chosen the number "23" for two reasons:

Dad-Blogs.com is a sponsor of Talking Sports with Wes & J.R. on KLBC 1610 AM in Long Beach, CA.  Beginning with this episode, we will be posting weekly the 15 minute Dad-Blogs segment in it's entirety.  This week J.R. goes off on Tiger Woods and breaks down Tiger's tearful speech and interprets it for you.  It's one of those wacky "this is what he said, but this is what he meant" things.

You can hear it live on Friday night shortly after 7 PM Pacific/10 PM Eastern at 1610 AM in Long Beach or you can get the link to listen online at www.wesandjr.com

Much has been made of the demise of my beloved Tar Heels. For the most part, I have remained quiet while the “haters” have had their fun.

I admit the the Heels' fall from grace has been ugly. Each time I think they have hit rock bottom, they have gone even deeper. Last night’s blowout loss to Georgia Tech was no different. Last I heard, Marcus Ginyard rolled his ankle and never returned to the game. Pretty tough to win a game when your best players are sitting in suits on the bench.

That being said, this has been a year like none I have ever seen. I don’t think anyone saw this coming. Even the preseason polls had the Heels picked anywhere from fourth to sixth (which was WAY off, by the way).

What you have in Chapel Hill is a perfect storm of sorts. No team, I repeat, NO TEAM can lose four starters and five of your top scorers and return the next year just as strong. Even in North Carolina. That was problem No. 1.

Consequences of an uncapped year in the NFL

Over the past two days we've been busy dissecting the Saints Super Bowl XLIV victory over at my NFL blog Draft Nuggets. Naturally we started to turn our attention to wondering what is next for both Super Bowl participants. However, before beginning our analysis we felt that it was important to understand how the landscape of the 2010 off season is about to change.

Barring an eleventh hour deal between the league and the NFLPA on a new collective bargaining agreement the composition of the free agent class will be substantially different than it has been in years past.

In the likely event that the NFL enters 2010 without a salary cap players will now require six years of accrued service in the league in order to be eligible for unrestricted free agency rather than four. According to an Associated Press report 212 players that would have been unrestricted free agents under the old CBA framework will now find themselves restricted.

This particular change obviously favors the teams by enabling them to retain a player's rights for two additional seasons, or provide relief in the form of draft picks, which will inherently become more valuable.

Another matter that will impact both the Colts and the Saints, as well as the other six teams that made it to the divisional round of the playoffs, is the "Final Eight Plan". Under this mechanism any of these teams will be prohibited from signing an unrestricted free agent unless they lose one of their own.
