With the news that Lebron James has officially submitted his request to the NBA to change his number next season from 23 to 6, I got to thinking about numbers. Specifically those of our sports icons and heroes. When I say 99, there's no doubt whose number comes to mind (no, not Rick "Wild Thing Vaughn"). Thanks to the MLB retiring the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson, that one is a no brainer as well. In Boston, there's the great "33" and in LA, "32" holds a pretty special place. As a Carolina fan, the numbers "50" and "23" hold great value in our home.
I'll reserve my thoughts on why Lebron would do this (*cough* money *cough*) and what I actually think about it (*cough* staying in Cleveland *cough*) because I am interested in a greater discussion. I think I'm accurate in saying that as kids, most of us chose a number that was "our number". I know I did and my son has been no different. My 9 year old has chosen the number "23" for two reasons:
