Xbox Project Natal Review

natalAs daddy bloggers, I am still not sure we get as much respect as mommy bloggers but sometimes, that is OK.  For instance, my wife – a mommy blogger (bizmommy.com) – was invited by Xbox to a VIP event to introduce its newest product, known as Xbox Natal.  The kids and I got to tag along.  Score.

I am not, by any means, a “gamer.”  I don’t own any gaming consoles and the last time I played on one regularly was probably in my teens and, even then, it was only once in a while.  So, I am not the best person to write a review but, since this was a special opportunity, I will make an attempt.

Xbox Natal puts you in control.  There is no remote or any sort of joystick apparatus.  You’re body and voice controls the games entirely.  Although Wii started this trend with their controller, this takes it to the ultimate level.  The game recognizes 40 points on a person’s body as well as your voice to allow your movements and speech to control the avatars on screen.

Redbox - It's only $1

A Redbox kiosk located at a Walgreens store in...

While I would assume that most people have heard of Redbox and are regular users, it's worth letting others know about it. Now that we have three kids under the age of 9 years old, we don't get out to movies like we used to . If it's not Disney or computer animated, we're probably not seeing it.  Plus, I am not sure that people are aware of the best part about this little nugget of $1 goodness.

For those that are not familiar, or have walked by the boxes and seen the lines, here's the deal with Redbox. Like an ATM for DVD's, you can rent DVD's for 24 hours and it's only $1. As long as the DVD is returned by the next evening at 9:00pm, you only pay $1. If you happen to not get it back in time, or didn't get to see it and keep it another 24 hours, they just charge you an additional $1 for the extra nights rental. It's that simple. With the economy being what it is and most people looking to save expenses where they can, Redbox is a great alternative.

But wait there's more....

Reserve it online - Quite possibly the best part about Redbox is the online capability. Before you ever leave the house, you can go to redbox.com and reserve the movie you want. Redbox.com allows you to search by movie or by box. Want to see a specific film? Search for it online and redbox.com will tell you where the closest box with that title is. Reserve it online and it will be waiting when you get there. Only have one Redbox near your house? Hit redbox.com and find out what is available in the box before you even get there. With Redbox, using the online site is the key to getting the movie you want.

If you're going to use Redbox, do yourself (and those waiting in line at the boxes) a favor, set up an account online and reserve it before you get there. Drive up, swipe your card, get your movie. No waiting (unless there is someone in front of you that doesn't know what they want).

Game Review: ShapeBuilder for the iPhone/iPod Touch

ShapeBuilderAlways on the lookout for new and well built toddler-level games for my iPod Touch, I was happy to hear from game developer Darren Murtha about his puzzle game, ShapeBuildericon. Geared towards the 3-6 year old set, it's a simple drag and drop game that managed to hold both my 3.5 year old daughter's interest for several hours, on and off over the course of a week, as well as the attention of my friends' 5 year old son.

Both kids were able to pick up the mechanics of the game with a minimum of prodding - my daughter immediately figured it out, and her older friend only took a few seconds to learn the finger touch interface, having never played with an iPhone or Touch before. After that, it was off to the races, as he sat mesmerized by the activity of arranging the pieces in their proper positions while reading the resulting words that popped up on the screen when the puzzle was complete and the final image revealed.

pacmanHey people!  Welcome to my little corner of the world here at Dad-Blogs.  I guess you already know a little bit about me and my life by reading the section above, but I haven't met you.   Well hey...it's nice to meet you! Now that we have the formalities out of the way let's get down to business. nes

Let's travel back to the wonderful year of 1987.  That's the year that I received my first video game system ever.  Yep, you guessed it!  The Nintendo Entertainment system!  I fell in love from the very beginning.  Opening up the box with it's pristeen packaging and it's plastic-y, electronic smell (SNIIIIFFFFFFFFFFF) ....ah..I love it!  Best part about game  systems in the 80's and early 90's was the amazing box art and pictures of games on the back that you could also add to your collection for a pretty penny.
