elephantWhen I was growing up, my father worked a swing shift at a factory and was hardly ever home. Most of the time he was working or sleeping while I was home and on the few days off or free hours he had, dad spent it fixing up the house and taking care of other head of the household duties.

My dad didn’t get to see many of my baseball or basketball games. I didn’t get to have those weekend fishing trips or spend a few hours a week playing catch in the backyard. He didn’t want to work those hours, but it was the only way he could provide the life he wanted for his family. My father sacrificed much of his family time for the sake of providing for that same family.

As a teen, I made the decision that no matter the circumstances, I would not be that kind of father to my children. I would spend every waking moment making memories and work only as much as needed. I would play with them outside, go to as many of their extracurricular activities as I could and always be there for them. I wanted to create a work-life balance.

article-affair-photoWith the rash of recent headlines regarding cheating celebrities such as Tiger Woods, Jesse James, David Boreanaz, and Mel Gibson one would think that the idea that catching your spouse wandering outside of the confines of your marriage means the demise of the relationship.  But does it really?

First of all getting caught cheating on your spouse in front of the entire world is not the same as John or Joesephina Q Public straying outside the confines of their marriage. If you are the only one to know then that will be your lesson alone. If you are caught that still isn’t the same as being a public figure whose income is dependent on the public’s perception of their private lives.

Faith & Fatherhood: "Go Fly a Kite"

kiteYesterday was a beautiful, warm and windy day in the fields of Madison County.  My 5 year old came to me, eager to unfold his latest superhero’s kite.  Spiderman had been a huge winner, but used his spidey-sense to detect an opportunity to exploit my son’s weakness and took flight, starting his unmanned voyage across the vastness of America’s heartland, riding on the westward wind.

It was a difficult lesson for Tig.  I think he believed that Spidey was the only kite he’d ever have to hold, and love, and cherish.  They’d formed a quick bond, over the period of their two flights together.  So when the spindle tore loose of his bike’s handlebars, he was thrown into a grievous fit of despair.  And when I pulled a second kite out of the closet several days later, a smaller, green crocodile kite, he was overjoyed at the opportunity for a second chance.  But it was short lived, as the small crocodile kite had a spinning tail.  Unbeknownst to me, spinning tails are a sure sign that the kite will S U C K.

maple-leaf-coolThe state of Arizona has sparked a fierce debate over the role of illegal aliens in American society, and has taken drastic steps to curb what to them is a primarily Hispanic problem.  There is a more dangerous and nefarious illegal immigration problem that has been overlooked by society and the media in general … the dreaded Canadians.

Our peace-loving, maple leaf-wearing, hockey-obsessed neighbors to the north have been able to sneak into this country unnoticed for years ripping important jobs from the hands of hard-working American zamboni drivers everywhere.

Their reach goes far beyond the hockey rink as they bring radical ideas like universal healthcare and cheap prescription drugs to the attention of our virginal American ears. One Drug Company CEO who spoke to us in anonymity said their influence is taking a toll.

redneck-hot-tubMy body clock’s alarm went off at 4:17 this morning. In the past, I have been a night owl, working until the wee hours in the morning. That is no longer the case. I find that I have begun to awaken anywhere between 4am and 5am. This is becoming the case even when I don’t have to go to work. I may go back to sleep for awhile, but the clock is only reset for a short while.

One of the things that I will do early in the morning is go to my local YMCA for a workout. While I’m not the Lou Ferrigno type, I do believe that it important for us to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

After about 50 minutes of weight-lifting and cardio, I proceeded to begin my favorite activity at the Y; the whirlpool spa.  I often get into the hot, steaming water and commune with God. If this is not possible due to others in the tub talking, I simply close my eyes…and listen. That’s what I did this morning. Simply closed my eyes and listened to three older gentlemen in the hot tub. They were reminiscing about their early years.
