Planning for a child is never easy because of all the added accessories a child requires. Blankets, pacifiers, bibs and teething rings are just a few examples of what a baby will need within the first three months. However, the one accessory that is important above all others is diapers. Diapers, diapers and more diapers. It is such an important part of a babies life. Disposable diapers, come in a few different brands, such as: Huggies, Pampers and Luvs. (Store Brands are known to work great as well! For example, Target or Publix.)
It is hard to decide what size to buy first because you really have no clue as to what size your baby will be born. It might be a good idea to figure your child will go through 8-10 diapers a day. If your child uses eight diapers in 60 days that is 480 diapers. Are you starting to sweat a little?
On average, most babies are born weighing at least 7-8lbs. Although, there are the special cases when children come out and the only thing that fit them are preemie diapers. Preemie diapers are for babies weighing up to 6lbs. If your baby is at least 7 to 8lbs he or she will be able to wear N's or Newborn diapers (up to 10lbs.) The next step are 1's (10 to 14lbs) and then 2-3 (14-22lbs).
Confused yet? Don't be. The trick is to be prepared before Mr. Stork drops off your bundle of joy.
Diaper cheat sheet-
Preemie - babies weighing up to six pounds.
Newborn - babies weighing up to ten pounds.
1's- babies weighing 10 to 14 pounds and 2-3 for babies weighing 14-22 pounds.
A good rule of thumb is whenever you find out you are expecting start stocking up. There are various on line stores such as Diapers.com, Amazon.com and discountdiapersdirect.com that allow for free shipping with a minimum purchase. If you would rather buy in person because you would need them quicker than a 5-7 day turn-around drive over to the nearest Target, Babies-r-us, local grocery store (Kroger, Publix, Ingles) or Walmart. It seems that Walmart has the best prices.
"How early should I begin buying diapers," you ask?
As soon as you find out you're expecting! Anytime you are out shopping pick up a box of Newborns or 1's and do this once or twice a month. If you begin stocking up early then it is good chance you can stock up at least six to eight months worth of diapers.
"What if I forget to stock up?"
Don't stress out! It is almost certain that you will receive some diapers as gifts at your partner's baby showers. You may get lucky and get a diaper cake. They are rather a popular gift for new couples. Also, the hospital gives you diapers. Not a lifetime supply, of course, but enough to make it through your days in the maternity ward. They also give you a couple of packs to take home.
Planning ahead is an important aspect when starting a family. You will be pleasantly surprised at how a good stock of diapers can set your mind at ease whenever junior arrives and you are not running out during the first or second month.
Good luck stocking up!

I would also suggest getting the SUPER absorbent ones for night time use only. We found that changing a diaper in the middle of the night would wake our daughter up too much and she would not be able to go back to sleep. If we did not change she would soak through her clothes. Since we have been using the SUPER SOAKERS no problem. I figure as long as no rash no harm.
Another idea that I have seen is for a the dad to have a "shower" before the baby is born but do it a little different then normal. Have a poker night. Buy in is 2 packs of diapers and 5 dollars. Winner takes the cash, you keep the diapers.
I find that then 8-10 is a good average but we have been a little closer to 6-8 in the most recent months (month 5-9).

And I'd recommend Pampers and NEVER the cheap store bought brands. We tried them for a while and they don't hold as much as Pampers, plus they gave my kid a rash every time.
